Yoga flash mob takes shoppers by surprise on Saturday

A HUNDRED yoga enthusiasts took over the city centre this weekend with a flash mob at Midsummer Place.

The ‘Yogis’ laid claim to one of the busiest places in the city during peak shopping time on Saturday afternoon, when they unfurled their mats in the main concourse of the shopping centre.

The project, led by local yoga schools and teachers who work to bring yoga to everyone, started with just two random yogis, but within minutes there were more than 100 people moving silently in sequence, all dressed in white tops to symbolise peace.

The group – a mixture of all ages and abilities from kids to retirees – showed how yoga can make you strong and supple as they made their way through the challenging moves, before departing as if nothing had ever happened!

Deborah Berryman, one of the organisers, said that while yoga has become hugely popular, even more people could benefit.

She said: “The ‘Peace in the City’ Flashmob was to help to raise awareness of yoga and meditation as a lifestyle choice – helping everyone to find a little bit of peace and calm in the chaos of life. “Judging by the interest shown from the onlooking crowd, we may have achieved that goal.”
