When the Jacksonville Sharks play the Philadelphia Soul for an Arena Football League conference championship Saturday at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, it’s going to mean something financially to the city and the team.
Postseason play in most professional sports leagues provides multifaceted financial impact.
“It’s significant,” said Sharks owner and managing partner Jeff Bouchy.
Bouchy and the AFL administration in general have been careful not to market the teams and games as competition to the NFL or the Jaguars. AFL games are in the NFL offseason and competition itself is radically different, played on a 50-yard field in arenas with seven-on-seven squads and plenty of scoring.
While arena football is not on the same footing as the NFL, local business experts say no one should overlook the financial impact of the extra games as the winner of the game between the Sharks and the Philadelphia Soul advances to ArenaBowl XXVI in Orlando Aug. 17.
